President Donald Trump has officially appointed Leo Brent Bozell III as the new US ambassador to South Africa, marking a significant leadership transition as he succeeds Reuben Brigety.

Trump announced the news on X on Wednesday.  Brigety resigned on January 10.

"I am pleased to announce that Brent Bozell will be our next United States Ambassador to South Africa. Brent is the Founder of the Media Research Center, which has exposed Fake News hypocrites for many years.

"Brent brings fearless tenacity, extraordinary experience, and vast knowledge to a Nation that desperately needs it. Congratulations, Brent!" he said.

The news comes after IOL reported on Tuesday that Bozell III, a conservative media commentator, has been nominated by the Donald Trump administration to become the next ambassador to South Africa.

Bozell's nomination comes after Dana Brown abruptly resigned last month as the US chargé d'affaires in South Africa, with immediate effect.

David Greene has been assigned to the position in her place. As tensions between Washington and Pretoria continue to rise, there has been conjecture in the weeks preceding this declaration about who would succeed Brigety in Pretoria.

Interestingly, Joel Pollak, the South-African born well-known member of the MAGA movement, had been proposed as a possible successor to Brigety.
