With a surge of devotion and cultural vibrancy, the Indian community in Johannesburg recently commemorated Shiv Jayanti in a grand celebration, organised by the Marathi Mandal South Africa (MMSA).

The event was held under the patronage of the High Commission of India, Pretoria, and the Consulate General of India, Johannesburg, in association with the Shree Radhe Shyam Mandir.

The celebration, marking the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, resonated with the chants of "Jay Bhavani, Jai Shivaji," paying homage to Maharaj's valour and wisdom.

"This year's event holds significant importance as it establishes Shiv Jayanti as a permanent fixture in the Johannesburg Indian community’s annual calendar," said Nilendra Pardeshi, the public relations manager of the Marathi Mandal South Africa NPC.

"The day commenced with community members joining forces to prepare a traditional Maharashtrian feast for the post-celebration dinner. The festive ambience was further enhanced by the hoisting of the Gudi, pretty rangoli, and the beautiful decoration of Maharaj’s palki.

"A grand palki procession, the highlight of the event, saw participants chanting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jai. The procession included performances from the Lezim Pathak and a saffron flag dance, creating a sea of saffron in the surroundings."

There were song, dance and skits depicting important moments from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's life.

He said the palki procession reflected the respect and admiration for Maharaj.

"Following this, demonstrations of traditional martial arts like mardani khel and lathi-kathi showcased our rich heritage."

A statue of Maharaj was also installed.

There was also a group rendition of the Maharashtra Geet, followed song, dance and skits depicting important moments from Maharaj’s life.

"The event served not only as a vibrant cultural exhibition but as a lesson in courage, leadership, and patriotism; by honouring the region's traditions, the event underscored the importance of cultural preservation and its impact on community identity."

Maharaj was a 17th-century Indian warrior king and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. He carved out an independent Maratha kingdom battling the mighty Moguls and the Adilshahi sultanate, which formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire.

He is known for his military prowess, administrative skills, his deep respect for women, including those of his enemies, and his promotion of Marathi culture and language.

"Shiva Maharaj implemented effective governance systems. He is considered by the Indian naval forces as the Father of Indian Navy and introduced policies that were ahead of his time. His resistance against Mughal rule and establishment of a strong Maratha state inspired future generations of Indian nationalists. Shivaji Maharaj's legacy continues to shape Indian identity, with his ideals of courage, self-rule, and religious tolerance remaining relevant in modern India."
