Living in the digital era can be overwhelming because people spend most of their time on the screen and sometimes neglect themselves.

As much as playing games and scrolling through social media can be fun, spending too much in front of the screen can harm your overall well-being.

Brad Kirby, Senior Specialist Gaming & Esports at MTN, shares tips on how to manage screen tips to prioritise your well-being.

Set clear limits

Setting boundaries is important because in most cases, people spend more time on the screen than they should have. To manage your time better, create specific guidelines for yourself and your family regarding when and how long screens can be used.

For instance, set limits on non-work-related screen use to no more than two hours per day.

Use technology intentionally

Don’t waste your time searching for meaningless things. When searching on the internet, at least look for the latest news updates, check your emails, respond to messages and then put your phone down.

Create screen-free zones

You don’t have to take your phone with you everywhere, that is why the bathroom and the bedroom should be screen-free zones. That way, you’ll be able to fall asleep easily without wasting too much time scrolling through your phone.

Take regular breaks

Follow the 20-6-20 rule to prevent eye strain: every 20 minutes, look at something six metres away for at least 20 seconds. Incorporate breaks into your routine to stand, stretch or take a short walk, especially if your work involves prolonged screen use.

Be mindful of your screen use

Remember, it’s all about balance. Practice mindful usage by being aware of how much time you spend on screens and what you’re doing.
