Musician and producer Mpho Mohlong, popularly known as Mpho.Wav, has reunited with singer-songwriter Simmy for the infectious and artful single, “Emini”.
The two have teamed up four years after their first collaboration on the single “Mabhungu”, which appears on Simmy’s sophomore album, “Tugela Fairy – Made of Stars”.
“Emini” is a heartfelt ballad that evokes comfort and bliss, making it a perfect soundtrack for love.
“It is simply just about love and its hardships thereof. It’s a musical description of how love can be both a fulfilling and daunting experience, and I’m very excited to have teamed up with my sister Simmy to tell this story,” shared Mpho.Wav.
Drawing inspiration from their everyday experiences, the two have managed to create a timeless offering that is sure to resonate deeply with music-lovers.
Mpho.Wav, who is a part of Sun-EL Musician’s label, Under the Sun, as an in-house session musician and music director, said ever since he met Simmy, his goal was to produce music with her.
Sun-EL Musician further fuelled his aspirations.
“Paying homage to my journey and how we’ve been working together since her sophomore album release, I just had to have her on a record and ‘Emini’ came about at a perfect moment.
“Working with Simmy has always been nothing short of amazing. She is a well-seasoned songwriter and vocalist, which was very inspiring for me to witness.
“This record is for all the music-lovers. It’s a beautiful record, a soundtrack to their most memorable moments with a wide range of sonical variations to make them feel, dance and be in love,” he said.
Aside from “Emini”, the duo have plans to release much more music, after the release of Mpho.Wav’s debut album, “Book Of Wav”, which comes out in the spring.
“It is such a special project to me because each and every record on the album makes reference to letters from the ‘Book Of Wav’, which tell the story of my musical journey till date.
“With this album I also pay homage to my biggest influences, such as Sun-EL Musician, Da Capo, Culoe De Song and Black Coffee, who have shaped my sound and inspired my craft to be what it is today.”
“Book Of Wav” will also feature special collaborations from Sun-EL Musician, Malumz On Decks, Da Capo, Simmy, South Sudan, Mthunzi, Fatso98, Lyrik Shoxen and Kenya-based vocalist, Nyamal Nyang.
“The album will be out this spring for everyone to enjoy and I’m really excited for people to receive my first of many albums,” he shared.
Mpho.Wav has collaborated and produced powerful hits with the likes of Msaki, Nobuhle, Azana, Kenza and Mörda since entering the music scene.
He said his recipe to surviving in the cut-throat industry is to always be consistent, willing to learn and adapting to change.
“I’ve learnt how to work effectively with other artists who have been doing music longer than I have, and I never want to close the door of learning new ways of doing things whether it be in music or the music business.
“Being consistent and learning as much as I can helped me grow a lot …
“I stay relevant through consistency and hard work, by being versatile and unique. I’m always designing sounds and creating new sonics. I will be introducing a lot of new sounds, styles and bringing a new flavour as the industry evolves.”
His advice to buddying musicians is to do the same.
“Be consistent, always create the music and put it out there because you never know who is listening. Stay positive and know that through hard work anything is possible.”
