Maphosa Modiba says the South African Olympic side competing at the Cosafa (Council of Southern African Football Associations) Castle Cup is packed with talent and once they cut out the anxiety in their game can be a match for any team.
South Africa overcame two poor first half showings to beat Lesotho (on penalties after a 1-1 draw) and thump the full Swaziland senior side 5-1 on their way to Saturday's final against Botswana in Windhoek.
And Modiba says that, when on song, they can be a match for anybody, if only they can put together a full 90 minutes. “Against Swaziland we said we needed to push ourselves to start well and finish well,” Modiba told supersport.com.
“That's what we did, but at the 25-minute mark we dropped our intensity and started just pumping the ball forward. “That's how they (Swaziland) scored their goal. So before the second half the coach told us to relax and play our normal game. That's basically what we did and we managed to get the goals.”
Modiba was not on the score sheet, but it was another stand-out performance from the winger.
“Individually I think I did well, but it is not about me, as long as the team wins. We have been creating chances and not scoring goals, so yesterday we obviously did much better with that.
“We are looking forward to the final now, it is a chance to win some silverware and to build confidence ahead of the Olympics.”
