The South African entertainment industry is in mourning following the untimely death of Yolanda Nyembezi, known affectionately as Yallunder.
The multifaceted musician, who captivated audiences with her rich voice and passionate artistry, passed away on March 13, 2025 at the age of 31, after a prolonged battle with illness.
Born on August 23, 1994 in Bizana, Eastern Cape, Nyembezi signed her record deal with 1020Cartel and released her influential EP, Uthando Lwam, in 2020, earning her a devoted fanbase and acclaim as a powerful voice in South Africa’s blossoming music scene.
The heartbreaking news of her passing was confirmed by her family, who shared a heartfelt statement reflecting on her remarkable life and the deep impact she had on those around her.
“It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of our beloved daughter, sister, and friend, Yolanda Nyembezi,” they expressed. “A soul so rare and a voice so rich, Yolanda graced this earth with a spirit that was as warm as it was powerful.”
Despite her struggles with health issues, including iron deficiency and anaemia, the star remained resilient and inspiring.
The artist's passing has left a profound void in the hearts of her family, friends, and fans across the nation.
“Losing her has left an unimaginable void in our hearts,” her family continued. “But we take comfort in knowing that her music, her legacy, and the love she poured into the world will live on forever.
“She has been in the hospital, and she has not been well since last year. She was in and out of the hospital the whole of 2024. She was not in a good state,” her manager, Lerato Sejeng, revealed.
The mourning has extended beyond her immediate circle, with prominent figures in the South African music scene expressing their condolences.
Oskido, a well-known name in the industry, shared his grief: “Rest in peace, Yallunder. I am deeply saddened by her passing. My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
Meanwhile, Composer Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO) offered their sympathies in a statement emphasising her significant contribution to the music community: “A gifted artist with a voice that touched many, her impact on the South African music scene will never be forgotten.”
