If you have a problem with a private sector pension scheme, you can approach John Murphy, the Pension Funds Adjudicator.
But don't be surprised if his response is some time in coming: he and a secretary must serve 11 million retirement fund members and he has a backlog of more than 800 complaints to investigate.
The Sapref ruling took Murphy eight days. Some complaints can be dealt with faster but Murphy reckons that unless he gets more staff, in three years time the backlog of cases will have swelled to 3 000.
