Dozens of patients from the Mossel Bay sub-district regained their sight through a dedicated cataract outreach initiative.

This programme, designed to improve eye health and restore vision, provided free cataract removal surgeries to pre-screened individuals referred by their local clinics.

Dr Juliana van Jaarsveld, Clinical Manager of the Mossel Bay sub-district, expressed her gratitude for the collaborative effort:

“We were privileged to have Dr Bruce-Brand perform cataract surgeries on 40 patients at Mossel Bay Hospital. Despite the ongoing challenge of recruiting ophthalmologists, we aim to hold at least four outreach programmes per year.

"We were also fortunate to receive support from Mr Arie Kade of Vidamed Day Hospital and Dr Nelis le Roux, a private ophthalmologist, who completed another 16 surgeries on 15 March. In total, 56 patients had their sight restored in just one week.”

The Impact of Cataracts – And the Power of Restoration

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, significantly affecting the quality of life, especially among older adults. Left untreated, they can lead to severe vision impairment, limiting independence and daily activities.

For Peter Davids, a resident of Great Brak River, cataract surgery has been life-changing:

"I had my right eye operated on last year, and now it’s my left eye’s turn. I’m incredibly grateful to the hospital and staff for giving me back my vision—not just to see, but to read my 1983 print of the Bible.”

Another patient, Valerie Lourens, is looking forward to reclaiming her independence:

“Before I had my first eye done, I had to rely on others for simple tasks like visiting the bank. Poor eyesight takes away your freedom. I’m so excited to have my second eye treated. The staff here are amazing, especially Sr Seconds, who calmed my nerves and made me feel at ease.”

A Commitment to Accessible Eye Care

Beyond performing cataract surgeries, the outreach programme ensures follow-up care to support long-term recovery and prevent complications.

“Vision is essential for leading an independent and fulfilling life,” added Dr van Jaarsveld. “Through free screenings and cataract surgeries, we are tackling preventable blindness in our community, ensuring that financial barriers don’t stand in the way of sight.”

If you or a loved one are experiencing vision problems, visit your local clinic for screenings and referrals for free cataract surgery.
