A vehicle crash in the Northern Cape has claimed the lives of two members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
The SANDF truck carrying 19 soldiers overturned along the R31 road between Koopmansfontein and Delportshoop on Friday, February 7.
The provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said police are investigating a culpable homicide case.
“Preliminary information indicates that the accident occurred Friday afternoon, The truck was traveling with 19 SANDF members from Lohatla Army base en route to Kimberley,” Kock said.
He said the two soldiers died on the scene.
“Two SANDF members, a male and female died on the scene and 17 others were injured and transported to hospital for medical treatment. The identities of the deceased not yet known as their next of kin must be informed,” Kock said.
He said the SANDF truck was traveling in rainy weather conditions when the accident took place.
“The cause of the accident forms part of the police investigation,” Kock said.
In a separate incident, the Kakamas Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit are searching for a suspect who attacked a couple and raped a woman on January 26, near Voortrekker Street.
“An identikit of the suspect was compiled and he is estimated to be in his late 20s to early 30s, a Coloured male, speaking Setswana and Afrikaans,” police said.
The police are requesting the assistance of the public and any person who may have information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect, and contact the investigating officer, Constable Lesego Mokati at 079 697 7836.
