The South African National Parks is mourning the loss of a four-legged patroller, Ben, killed in a vicious crocodile attack.
The SANParks Kruger National Park stated that one of the dogs ran for some water in the nearby river, and subsequently got attacked by a crocodile.
"The rangers tried to rescue the dog without any success. Further investigations into the matter are under way," the post on social media read.
The SANParks Honorary Rangers also shared a touching tribute to Ben.
"We would like to express our deepest sadness over the recent event in the Kruger National Park involving one of the K9 anti-poaching dogs. Our hearts go out to the dedicated K9 handler and all those affected by this loss.
"Committed to preserving our precious wildlife, the K9 units and their handlers face numerous challenges, often placing themselves in danger to safeguard these lands. This loss reminds us of the bravery and sacrifice involved in protecting our precious natural heritage," the group said.
It added that Ben’s service and commitment to wildlife protection were unparalleled, and he lived a life rich with purpose, courage, and loyalty.
"His legacy in safeguarding our wildlife will be remembered, and his absence will be felt deeply. Our sincere condolences go to the handler, the team, and everyone who had the privilege of working alongside Ben," the group said.
SANParks further urged people to refrain sharing the videos of the attack on social media.
