On 5 March 2025, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) officially announced that Taiwan’s mission in the country would be renamed from the “Taipei Liaison Office” to the “Taipei Commercial Office”, with the relocation set for completion by 31 March. This decision is not merely symbolic; it is a resolute demonstration of South Africa’s commitment to sovereignty and its refusal to bow to external pressure in determining its diplomatic policies.
