Two men, aged 24 and 39, were arrested in Estcourt after police uncovered unlicensed firearms hidden inside a room on Alexander Street, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The operation carried out on Tuesday, was led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawk's Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, which is based in Pietermaritzburg.

KZN police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said acting on intelligence about illegal firearms in the area, officers searched the premises and found two pistols wrapped in a concealed packet. The suspects were unable to produce documentation, and both weapons had their serial numbers removed.

"The suspects were subsequently placed under arrest and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms. The estimated street value of the seized firearms is R20,000," said Ncane.

The firearms will undergo ballistics testing to determine whether they have been used in criminal activity.

The suspects appeared before the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, commended the officers for their swift action.

He urged the public to work with law enforcement in the fight against illegal firearms, emphasising the role of community cooperation in tackling crime.
