Paris - Renault has announced an all-new 1.3-litre turbopetrol engine that will eventually find its way beneath the bonnets of a multitude of vehicles across various brands.
The motor was developed in a partnership between the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and Mercedes-Benz.
Renault is the first to formally announce the engine, stating that it will initially be available in its Scénic MPV models in Europe before being rolled out to other models through 2018 and beyond.
So besides finding its way into the Clio, Captur, Megane and Kadjar, it’s also practically inevitable that the new motor will find its way into the Nissan Qashqai, amongst other models, as well as the imminent next-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class family.
Renault will for now offer it in three power guises - TCe 115 (85kW), TCe 140 (103kW) and TCe 160 (118kW) - but other brands could tune it to their own prefered output levels.
The engine, which was designed to offer stronger torque at lower revs and constant availability at higher rpm, features high-pressure direct injection as well as a cylinder coating technology inherited from the Nissan GT-R.
Depending on the power level, the 1.3T engine, which will inevitably replace the current 1.2T, will be offered with manual or EDC dual-clutch transmission.
