DURBAN - eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has congratulated King elect Misuzulu kaZwelithini following his official confirmation by the Presidency as the new King of Zulu Nation.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa officially recognised the heir to the throne as the King of the Zulu Nation in a statement released last night.

In a statement issued by the city, the Mayor expressed his wishes of good health for the King, saying that it is paramount to the execution of the mammoth responsibilities that come with the seat and ensuring that he cements the Zulu Kingdom’s position in the world as one that is resilient.

“We welcome the decision by President Ramaphosa, whom we have learnt consulted extensively before taking this route, and we congratulate Ingonyama from the bottom of our hearts for this milestone,” he said.

Kaunda further stated that as the only Metro in his kingdom, the city wishes to assure the King that it is ready to support all his initiatives that would improve the well-being of his subjects. He also went on to assure the entire royal house that eThekwini is their home and that they are looking forward to working with all of them in their efforts to put the city on the world map.

Kaunda further commended the Provincial Premier, Sihle Zikalala, for the manner in which he handled matters relating to the royal house.

“It would be very remiss of us not to give a pat on the back to our Premier for the distinguished leadership he has constantly provided on this matter under very difficult circumstances. The matters of the royal house must at all times be handled with care, and Khuzeni ( Zikalala) did exactly that,” he said.

He further relayed his gratitude to the rest of the people who attended to the matters of the royal house.

“We are also grateful to the team that was set up to attend the issues of the royal house led by our former Premier, Willies Mchunu, and we pray for eternal peace in the royal household,” concluded Kaunda.

The Mayor is expected to soon lead the team from the eThekwini Municipality to meet the King and introduce itself formally.
