Halloween is around the corner and if you are getting married this month, incorporate some spookiness to your theme instead of a traditional wedding.

“Halloween isn’t a traditional date for a wedding, and that’s what makes Halloween weddings so memorable,” says Chris Bajda from Groomsday, a one-stop online shop for wedding party gifts.

If you’re looking at spicing up your matrimony, Bajda shares some top seven spooky wedding themes you could explore.

A frightful night at a mansion

Turn horror into wonderland by booking an old mansion as your wedding venue and use vintage decor and clothes to bring the theme alive.

Elegant colours like dark blues and rich burgundies have vintage candelabras and old books as decor and create vases of wilted roses adorned with cobwebs.

If you are in Joburg, Beechwoods Gardens would be the perfect place.

Love at first bite

Whether you’re more into “Twilight” or “Dracula,” vampires have always been the creatures of the night that best mix horror and romance.

A vampire-themed wedding can go for a lot of beautiful deep red decor, with accents of black and flashes of silver.

Embrace gothic elegance

Instead of bridal make-up, go for something Gothic like smoky eyes, dripping red lipstick and lots of silver jewellery. You can even wear red hair and take the look to the next level.

Whispers in the woods

Most people prefer getting married during the day. However, there is nothing wrong with a night wedding. Something in the woods with fairy lights and lanterns lighting the venue could create a mysterious mood. Just make sure it’s a safe venue.

Painted faces on parade … masquerade

Imagine the glittering parade of the masquerade ball, where every mask hides a secret … Masquerades are a natural venue for spookiness, from the uncannily human-but-not-quite masks to the killer lurking in the crowd.

So, don’t be shy to ask your bridesmaids to explore with this idea.

Love beyond the grave

Zombies might not be the first thing you think when you think of romance but they are great for a horror-themed wedding.

“Tattered wedding gowns, faux blood stains, a dark veil for the bride, and a distressed or artfully torn suit for the groom,” says Bajda.

Realm of the spirits

What’s a spooky theme without ghosts and spirits? You add flair to your theme, add some edible glitter to the cocktails and make sure that the music matches well with the theme.

As a cherry on top, get your officiant to dress up in a spooky consume like Dracula or Ghostface.
