Trying a new sexual position is unlikely to help a woman get pregnant, a leading fertility expert advised yesterday.
...And nor does bedroom gymnastics.
Allan Pacey, professor of andrology at Sheffield University, who advises couples on how best to conceive, said that when it comes to trying to get pregnant any position will do.
‘People get into their heads a specific idea... and it’s very hard to shift it,’ he said at the ESHRE conference in Helsinki.
‘Then if their baby-making doesn’t follow that process, they feel guilt or they don’t have sex because it’s not quite the right time, or they have not had the right thing beforehand. Actually, they should just get on with it. To be frank I don’t think there is any evidence to suggest one thing is better.’ Dr Stuart Lavery, consultant gynaecologist at Hammersmith Hospital, agreed there was no evidence that any one sexual position improved the chance of conception. He said that all studies showed was that ‘it was actually just having more sex that got you pregnant’.
Professor Adam Balen, a reproductive medicine expert, said: ‘The important thing to say is that if you want to get pregnant, have lots sex – as much as you want, however you want – and enjoy it.’
