London – A drug that was originally developed for fake tanning may also improve libido.
Scientists found that bremelanotide, which boosts levels of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour), triggered sexual arousal in 90 percent of men testing it.
Subsequent research has suggested it may work for both men with erectile dysfunction and women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder – a persistent or recurrent lack of interest in sex.
It’s thought that the drug acts on the central nervous system – unlike Viagra, for instance, which engorges the blood vessels.
In a two-year trial, 550 women are being given the drug or a placebo at centres across the US.
