Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH), one of the largest hospitals in Africa, is set to introduce its in-house bakery by the next financial year, aiming to reduce operational costs and ensure a steady supply of fresh bread for its patients and staff.

The announcement was made by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, during the 7th Administration State of the Province Address debate held earlier this week at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

"Currently, the hospital consumes 500 loaves of bread daily, which incurs significant costs," Nkomo-Ralehoko said.

"By establishing an in-house bakery, we aim to cut down on these expenses, while enhancing operational efficiency."

However, the MEC was quick to assure that the move would not spell the end for local suppliers, who will still get their slice of business.

"The establishment of this bakery does not mean we are turning our backs on local cooperatives and SMMEs. On the contrary, we plan to foster partnerships with local community bakeries and cooperatives to maintain a steady supply of quality ingredients," she explained.

In addition to the bakery project, several infrastructure refurbishments and construction projects will also be completed. These projects include the completion of the hospital’s Neonatal Ward, nurses' accommodation, and the Burns Unit, all of which are due to open in the coming weeks.

"These projects are strategically located in townships, informal settlements, and hostels (TISH) areas to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare, reinforcing our commitment to leaving no one behind as we implement National Health Insurance," added Nkomo-Ralehoko.

The hospital’s bakery initiative is expected to create employment opportunities within Soweto, particularly for youth and local bakers, contributing to tackling unemployment in the area.
