AmaZulu FC showcased their resurgence as they secured a convincing 2-1 victory over Royal AM on Friday night to revitalise their hopes in the Premiership.
Usuthu made it three wins in the last four matches with goals in either half by Hendrick Ekstein and Mlondi Mbanjwa at the King Zwelithini Stadium in uMlazi.
The hosts, bolstered by two strategic changes to their line-up, displayed tenacity and flair, demonstrating why they are a formidable force in South African football.
The early exchanges set the tone for an electrifying encounter, as AmaZulu wasted no time asserting their dominance.
Just four minutes into the match, midfielder Celimpilo Ngema delivered a long ball that expertly pierced through the Royal AM defence, reaching left back Riaan Hanamub.
Yet, despite his brave attempt, Hanamub found himself thwarted by Royal AM goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto, who executed an impressive save to his left to keep the scores level.
Despite the setback, AmaZulu continued to press forward and were rewarded for their efforts in the 37th minute.
The ever-experienced Hendrick ‘Pule’ Ekstein seized an unexpected opportunity presented by Mpoto, who miscalculated an interception, leaving the goal wide open.
With composure and precision, Ekstein struck the ball into the gaping net from distance, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The home side’s confidence surged as they entered the second half, where they quickly extended their lead just three minutes in.
Mbanjwa, who had made a significant impact since his insertion into the starting line-up, took advantage of a well-placed pass from Etiosa Ighodaro.
Mbanjwa’s calm finish, sliding the ball past a helpless Mpoto, confirmed AmaZulu’s control of the match.
Despite the spirited display from Usuthu, Royal AM were not ready to concede defeat.
Following their two-goal deficit, Royal AM’s head coach John Maduka made decisive changes, introducing Levy Mashiane with the hope of turning the tide.
Mashiane, who had previously found the net against Kaizer Chiefs, demonstrated his striking instincts again in the 78th minute, reacting quickly to a rebound from a Richard Ofori save to score from close range to reignite the visitors’ hopes.
Wet conditions on the night had heightened the intensity of the match, with both teams competing fiercely in this clash of neighbours.
Yet, it was AmaZulu’s emphatic start and resolute performance that ultimately led them to victory, leaving Royal AM to reflect on missed opportunities despite their spirited fightback.
Usuthu will have a well-deserved break before their next fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns on Christmas Eve, while Royal AM must regroup as they prepare to face TS Galaxy on December 29.
