The second season of “Unfollowed” has premiered on our screens, with radio and TV personality Spitch Nzawumbi taking over from former host, Thembekile Mrototo.
The compelling hit show is now streaming on Showmax, with the first episode featuring the controversial “The Real Housewives” cast member and businesswoman, Mel Viljoen.
Each episode focuses on a different popular celebrity, unpacking the controversies that have defined their lives and careers, offering a candid look at the complexities of fame in the digital age.
In an interview with Showmax, Nzawumbi revealed his reason for agreeing to take over the reins from Thembekile Mrototo as the new host of the intense show.
“The format of the show is intense and blunt, but it's also conversational, which aligns with my broadcasting style. It has all the elements that best describe me: the journalistic side, the social media aspect, and the element of controversy,” he shared.
The television and radio host shared that even though good television matters, the truth matters more, since these are people with real life stories, and that is how he creates the balance between creating compelling content and journalism.
When asked what his approach is when interviewing a guest, he shared, “Each guest has a unique story, and every detail of that story guides the tone and nature of the entire interview. We all want to be heard and understood, regardless of our prominence in society.
“I always believe in affording my guests enough time to share their version of the truth, just as I believe they should be held accountable for their choices and actions. I’m a listener first, before being the interviewer. The more you listen, the more detail you get,” he said.
He further added that when conducting interviews, he gives his guests enough time to share their truth.
The host also revealed his perspective about “cancel culture” and said that being cancelled goes beyond the hashtag or trend of the day, being sensible and sensitive is important because it’s people’s reality.
Nzawumbi said that people should watch this season because they have done things differently from the last season.
“Anyone who misses out on this season will be left out of the conversation. ‘Unfollowed’ is trendy, topical, and current. It’s not just another TV show interviewing celebrities.
“We blend social media, TV, and reality. This season, we’ve upped the ante, doing things a little differently, but still delivering that magic television,” he said.
The likes of Pastor Mboro, popular sangoma and DJ, Gogo Skhotheni and media personality Bujy Bikwa, are expected in this season of Unfollowed.
