THE FAVOURITES in the entertainment industry have finally found out who the nominees for the 10th annual South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) are.
A breakfast event on Thursday at Montecasino in Fourways was the setting where actors, actresses, directors and other members of the production staff found out whether they’d made the cut.
Hosted by the National Film and Video Foundation, the Saftas will take place from March 18 to 20 at Gallagher Convention Centre. The second night of the ceremony will be a live TV broadcast.
The awards will celebrate their 10-year anniversary this year, with a new look and theme: “Imagine”. Top dog ZA News: Puppet Nation, a satirical show on StarSat, received 11 nominations.
This was followed by an SABC 3 mockumentary, Those Who Can’t, which got nine nominations, including one in the best TV comedy category.
Rise and Ingoma, both TV movies, and TV comedy Kota Life Crisis got eight nominations, with the lead actor and actress of Ingoma, Aubrey Poo and Zola Nombona, both being nominated for the best lead actor and best lead actress categories.
Soapies also got their turn in the sun, with soap dramas Saints and Sinners (Mzansi Magic) and Isibaya, both from DStv channel Mzansi Magic, getting seven nominations each. They were followed by Isidingo (SABC3) and Ashes to Ashes (e.tv), with six nominations each.
Dis Ek Anna led nominations in the feature film category with seven, including one for best achievement in scriptwriting for a feature film and another for best achievement in directing for a feature film. It was followed by While You Weren’t Looking and For Love and Broken Bones, each with six nominations.
Terry Pheto’s Ayanda earned six nominations.
