“Die Bloedhonde” is an Afrikaans murder mystery that is also funny and light-hearted. Saftas nominee Elani Dekker is cast as Katrien, who investigates a suspicious suicide while on an annual campout family vacation.
A loner and the black sheep of her family, Katrien isn’t comfortable with Hansie Muller's death being written off a suicide by the townsfolk.
Guided by her keen eye for detail and a gut feeling that there is more to the tragedy, she embarks on a mission to uncover the truth.
That’s where Jasper, played by Waldemar Schultz, comes in. He’s a permanent resident at the campsite and becomes Katrien’s crime-solving partner.
Their partnership is adorable– he’s a laid-back, fatherly figure and she’s a headstrong, no-nonsense investigator.
Jasper, who affectionately nicknames her “Mev Sherlock”, steps in to help when no one else believes her theory. Together, they form an unlikely detective team, determined to get to the bottom of things.
Katrien’s prime suspect is Dominee Lukas, played by the legendary Tobie Cronjé, as the local pastor. The church plays a central role in the tight-knit community and Katrien is convinced that he is hiding something.
As the pair dig deeper, their investigation takes them through a series of quirky interactions with locals, from questioning the kids to snooping into everyones lives.
These scenes provide charming moments while their deepening bond brings a heart-warming layer to the story.
Throughout “Die Bloedhonde”, Katrien’s no-nonsense approach to communication is both her strength and weakness.
While she’s determined to crack the case, she also realises that her bluntness can be off-putting. It’s a subtle nod to personal growth as both she and Jasper reflect on their own journeys while dealing with a real-life mystery.
The investigations sees the amateur detectives combing through CCTV footage and breaking the law, too, in leaving no stone unturned.
As the story unfolds, viewers are kept guessing. Was it really suicide? Or is there something much deeper going on? Jasper, hesitant at times, is continually pulled back into the investigation by an unrelenting Katrien.
This twist towards the ends adds an extra layer of complexity, keeping viewers hooked until the end.
