‘Happy Gilmore’ sequel in the works with Adam Sandler reprising his role

Adam Sandler’sHappy Gilmore” is getting a sequel after almost two decades.

The 1996 film centred on the Hollywood actor as a failed hockey player who discovers a talent for golf and competes in paid tournaments to raise money to prevent the foreclosure of his beloved grandmother’s house.

Netflix has recently announced that “Happy Gilmore 2” is in the works. Sandler will be reprising his titular role.

Modern Family” star Julie Bowen will return as Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest, alongside Christopher McDonald who features as the villain, Shooter McGavin.

A release date for the sports comedy has not been announced yet but Sandler recently confirmed that filming had started this month on “The Tonight Show”.

He said the sequel was being shot in New Jersey in New York City.

He also took to social media to confirm the production.

On Instagram, he shared an image of his character’s Boston Bruins jersey, with the caption: “It ain’t over. The way I see it …we’ve only just begun.”

The streaming service wrote on X: “Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix.”

It is also being reported that renowned musician Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Martínez Ocasio, will also star in the sequel, although his new role has not been confirmed yet.

He made his acting debut in 2021, as Arturo “Kitty” Paez in “Narcos: México”, while also starring opposite Brad Pitt in 2022’s “Bullet Train”.

American football star Travis Kelce will make a cameo in “Happy Gilmore 2”.

Sandler added on “The Tonight Show”: “Travis … mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis. He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life.

“What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

Before his appearance in the movie, the Kansas City Chiefs star will make his acting debut in Ryan Murphy’s new murder mystery, “Grotesquerie”, which will premiere at the end of month.

“The Hollywood Reporter” has reported that the forthcoming sequel will be directed by Kyle Newacheck, who also helmed 2019’s “Murder Mystery”, which starred Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.
