Durban — A woman has warned residents that there is vehicle remote jamming happening at Argyle Centre in Durban.

The woman took to her Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon and asked people to be aware that remote jamming is happening at Argyle Centre, which houses Mr Price Home, Mr Price Sports, West Pack Lifestyle and other stores.

“Bidvest management told me that they do not have cameras in this centre but rather a guard in a tower. Well, no guards are in the tower and theft is happening,” she said.

“Don’t shop at this centre unless you are well aware of the remote jamming. Crazy that the cost of a simple camera system is put ahead of the staff that work there and customers who shop there.”

Commenting on her Facebook post, a man said he got caught there three weeks ago.

He said he was in and out in less than five minutes and they had made off with the packets inside his car.

“It’s been an issue for years there, which is why they thought the ‘solution’ was to put a guard in the tower. Remote jamming doesn’t really alert much suspicious activity as it just looks like someone returning to their own vehicle or collecting something from their own vehicle … tower guard is of no use then,” he said.

Another woman said that there are small shops in Windermere Road that have anti-jamming devices and they put warning notices up. She feels that a big centre could surely provide similar protection to its customers.

“I won't be shopping there now. Thanks for the warning,” she said.

A third woman asked about the car owners’ responsibility to ensure that all their doors are locked: “I am sorry but I just have to ask … Do none of you check that your vehicle doors are locked before walking away from your car?”

Responding to the third woman’s comment, another said she checks every time – all four doors and the boot.

“I think people think I’m nuts ’cause I always get weird looks,” she said.

Another woman said she always checks too, no matter where she parks.

“It’s habit, like always keeping my bag and parcels in my boot. The only visible thing in my car is a snake on the dashboard,” she said.
