Durban - Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) rescued a German Shepherd that managed to get itself stuck in a manhole.
Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said paramedic Siyabonga Mthethwa went inside the manhole to rescue the dog.
Balram said Rusa had received a call at on Tuesday morning, reporting that a dog was discovered in the stormwater drain on Monday night. The caller told them that they had contacted an animal welfare organisation to assist on Monday evening but no assistance was provided.
“Reaction officers and paramedics were dispatched to assist and arrived at the manhole on Inanda Road between Sanaa township and Brindhaven in Verulam. The SPCA was contacted and arrived on the scene a short while later. After reaction officers cleared the shrubs, paramedic Siyabonga Mthethwa was lowered into the drain and eventually rescued the dog,” Balram said.
He said the Durban & Coast SPCA transported the animal to their premises for further medical care.
Balram confirmed to the Daily News that the dog was in fact the same one that they had issued a statement about on Monday night, indicating that it had gone missing that night.
“The owner identified the dog on Tuesday night,” Balram said.
The dog had gone missing from his home on Crescent Place in Brindhaven, Verulam, north of Durban, at 9pm on Monday night.
