Durban — The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has concluded the year with remarkable accolades.
In a press release, the Department of Education (DOE) said that this achievement demonstrates its commitment to the health and well-being of pupils through the successful implementation of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).
It further said that this initiative has not only earned provincial recognition but has also placed KwaZulu-Natal at the forefront of provincial government departments dedicated to providing nourishing meals to qualifying pupils.
Highlighted in a prestigious recognition ceremony, the province outshone its rivals in three distinct categories within the NSNP framework.
In the first category aimed at Quintile 1–3 Schools, KwaZulu-Natal triumphed with Amavenya Primary School from the Ugu District, which clinched first place. The accolade included a fully equipped, state-of-the-art kitchen valued at R4 million, along with a trophy and a certificate.
The DOE stated that this momentous achievement signifies the first time the province has secured such a distinguished national award, solidifying its reputation for excellence in educational nutrition.
Not resting on its laurels, KwaZulu-Natal once again showcased its strength in the second category for Farm Schools. Lions River Primary from the uMgungundlovu District emerged victorious, earning a cash prize of R80,000 and an official certificate.
Their achievement not only reflects the quality of nutrition provided but also highlights the critical role played by farm schools in the NSNP.
Also, the Zululand District rounded off the province’s commendations by securing third place in the category dedicated to district management of the programme, thus earning a printer as part of their recognition.
The MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka said these achievements are a testament to the hard work and conscientious efforts of officials, principals, teachers, and food handlers involved in implementing the nutritious programme.
“The programme aims to alleviate short-term hunger, minimise absenteeism, and contribute to improved learner performance, thus creating a better life for our people, entrenching their rights to freedom, and a vibrant economically empowered future for generations,” said Hlomuka.
