Durban — The family of a man who was killed in a car crash involving a truck on Black Friday are seeking help to get closure.
It is alleged that Shon Pramlall, 48, was travelling home along Higginson Highway, eastbound from Chatsworth to the intersection of Havenside, when a truck from RTT rammed into his Corolla Quest on November 25.
Pramlall’s brother, Manoj Pokhraj, said he still could not explain the condition his brother was in when he got to the crime scene. He said due to the shock he was unable to get the exact information of what happened.
“I saw on our local WhatsApp group that there was an accident. When a few people started calling me saying it could be my brother’s car involved in an accident, I immediately rushed to the scene. The logistics company said the Popi Act did not allow them to give us the vital information to get the answers,” said Pokhraj.
Pokhraj said he was shocked by the arrogant behaviour shown by the risk manager of RTT at the crime scene.
“That company’s representative showed total disrespect while human life was lost. They showed no remorse and refused their details. They kept saying they would only speak to the police and refused to give us the answers. They have all the cameras on their truck, yet they did not want to help, which raises many questions. What are they trying to hide?
“They gave us the insurance details. But refused to give us the full name of the truck driver or an opportunity for him to explain to us. We lost a loving, caring, happy-go-lucky father of two, a good son, husband and brother. Yet none of these people know what really transpired and it’s frustrating.”
Pokhraj said the truck driver was a free man and possibly still driving.
“He should be locked away and have his licence revoked. We cannot have people driving recklessly and not face the consequences,” said Pokhraj.
He added that they were grateful for the kind support shown to them during their time of grief. However, he said having people who witnessed the crash could help them find answers.
Meanwhile, RTT’s group services executive, Martin Bruning, said the company was aware that one of their drivers was involved in the incident.
He said they were following internal investigation procedures, and the relevant authorities were conducting their investigation.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said a case of culpable homicide had been opened at Bayview police station.
