CAPE TOWN - The South African short film Two Hues has claimed its fifth international award at the Wallachia International Film Festival in Romania.
Produced by Tribal Alchemy Productions, Two Hues was one of 24 films which made it to the finals in the featurette category, at this festival being a film between 15 and 60 minutes.
The festival is held annually in Wallachia and comprises about 400 films.
“I was very surprised as there were many finalists,” award-winning film-maker and performance artist Weaam Williams.
Located in rural Romania and marketed as the land of Vlad Dracula, the festival showcases horror and fantasy genre films.
Two Hues, written by Williams, is a short, psychological drama about a bipolar woman with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and her life navigating the patriarchy in her family and the workplace.
It also explores the ambiguous identity of Muslim women living in a Western context, and is set in Cape Town.
“I honestly did not think Two Hues would win at Wallachia because the festival is quite niche, and because Two Hues is an English film. However, this award speaks to the universality of the film and its ability to reach audiences and juries in different parts of the world. The proof of concept short has received wonderful acknowledgement from the independent film festival community and ought to give wings to the upcoming feature,” said Williams.
She recently scoope the Best Lead Actress at the West Europe International Film Festival, Brussels Edition, for her Two Hues.
Two Hues will screen at its Middle Eastern Premiere next month in Kurdistan, Iraq at The Kurdish International Independent Film Festival.
