Alleged“sextortionist”, Raybin Figland, has resigned as George municipality deputy mayor, avoiding a motion of no confidence.
Figland, who was recently let off the hook after the DA’s disciplinary process against him for misconduct found a “lack of sufficient evidence”, declined to comment on Thursday.
George municipality spokesperson Chantel Edwards said: “The George Municipality confirms that Figland has tendered his resignation as deputy mayor, effective 31 January 2025.
Figland will continue to serve as a proportional representative councillor following this date.”
GOOD Party councillor in George, Chantelle Kyd, said they welcomed Figland’s resignation but lamented that it took him and the DA “this long to do the right thing”.
Kyd said the resignation was a victory for George residents.
Figland was placed on suspension by the DA earlier this year after allegations surfaced that he allegedly blackmailed a matric pupil to provide photographs of a sexual nature.
“Moments before a motion of no confidence, brought to council by GOOD, the deputy mayor resigned.
“The DA said they were unable to proceed with their internal investigation because the alleged victim was not willing to participate in the giving of evidence.
“Despite a damning initial investigation done by the DA’s own Federal Legal Commission, the DA’s internal disciplinary process lifted his internal party suspension. During the DA’s Federal Legal Commission, Glynnis Breytenbach interviewed the victim, her father and Figland. The findings defined Figland as someone who ‘lies without hesitation’,” said Kyd.
Kyd said while Figland will work until the end of January, they would continue with the Public Protector process they initiated.
DA spokesperson Matthew Sims confirmed that Figland had resigned as deputy mayor.
