Volkswagen has unveiled a new version of its Polo GTI hatchback, giving the perky small car an Audi-derived 1.8-litre turbocharged engine in place of the previous 1.4-litre motor.
The upgrade provides the range-topping model of the recently face-lifted range with 192 horsepower, with power transmitted to the road via a six-speed manual gearbox fitted as standard.
The old Polo GTI came with a seven-speed dual shift box as standard. This is still available as an option.
VW says performance of the go-faster Polo has improved too. The Polo GTI hits 100 kilometres per hour from zero in 6.7 seconds and can top 236 km/h.
Trademark features of the Polo GTI include a sports suspension with adaptive control and a subtle tailgate spoiler along with red signature badges, special bumpers and sports front seats like those fitted to the larger Golf GTI sibling.
