SONGBIRD Simangele (Sima) Mashazi hopes to take listeners on an emotional journey at The Crypt tonight. “I believe that music has no boundaries and so manages to free us from our own,” says Sima.

“The beauty of music is that whether you understand the words sung, or not, you will always be touched by it and enjoy it, because it goes past our defences and connects with our hearts. So from my heart to yours, my singing is the gift I give to you,” she adds.

This vibrant young vocalist’s lifelong passion has always been singing. She enjoys variety and is versatile in the genres she can perform – ranging from light, laid back contemporary jazz to swinging standards and soulful ballads. “Nothing makes me happier than to sing, and to share and enjoy music with others.”

Sima grew up in Newcastle in Kwazulu Natal. From a young age she started taking part in various musical activities available to her – singing at church, school and in provincial choirs and taking part in regional eisteddfods. Thereafter she moved to Stellenbosch where she gained basic music training, as well performance experience.

She has performed with people such as Jennifer Jones, Brandon Oktober and Zamar, and done backing vocals for artists like Heinz Winckler and Cofield Mundi.

Concerts SA presents An Evening of Standards and SA Jazz featuring the talents of Sima’s quartet, which includes Ramon Alexander on piano, Chadleigh Gowar on bass and Annemie Nel on drums. See them tonight at The Crypt Jazz Restaurant at 1 Wale Street from 8pm to 11pm.
