ACCORDION and guitar duo, Régis Gizavo and Louis Mhlanga, stage their Takalo Tour, at Alliance Francaise du Cap on Friday at 7pm.
Gizavo and Mhlanga’s decision to tour Southern Africa this year follows their first meeting in 2002, drawing on their personal experiences to create a repertoire based on diversity and cultural dialogue. The goal of this collaboration is not only an affirmation of the talents of these two musical ambassadors, but also a unique experience where diversity and cultural exchange meet. Takalo, meaning “exchange” in Malagasy, reflects the spirit in which the two artists collaborate.
The venue’s First Thursdays showcase from 6pm features a painting and photography exhibition by Razia Myers, Nontyatyambo Kubule and Sibongile Mditshwa. Cape Town based artist Myers has walked a path of discovery that has catapulted her to new heights. Her art is full of energy and emotion and depicts her travels in India. Myers’ work is quick to point out that “art must stop you in your tracks! Art without impact isn’t art, it's simply work without soul”.
Kubule is a photographer from Cape Town. Through his photographs, he wants to share his impressions. He wrestles with every image he shoots and thrives for perfection which he thinks is possible. Mditshwa got into photography, as he says, by “mistake”. Today, he is doing mostly fashion work but doesn't want to be boxed into a category. He is open to new opportunities and is working with Times Of Ulutsha, which is supported by Creative Nestlings.
The exhibition will be displayed for the whole of March.
On March 12 at 6.30pm Tomboy will be screened. Here a family moves into a new neighbourhood, and a 10-year-old named Laure presents as a boy named Mikhael to the local children. The film follows his experiences with his newfound friends. It focuses in on the significance of gender identity in social interaction from an early age, the difficulties of being transgender and young, and how Mikhael navigates these in the background of childhood play and love. Duration 82 minutes. This free screening is a French speaking movie with English subtitles.
A (Her)oes event on March 12 at 9pm sees women’s week end on a high note. The venue welcomes DJ Tracey Rose and Xhosa dancers.
