Firefighters expect a rise in calls for help from people trapped in handcuffs and other bondage aids after the British debut of the erotic film Fifty Shades of Grey this weekend.
“Fire chiefs are concerned the new Fifty Shades of Grey film could lead to more people being stuck or trapped in objects like handcuffs or rings,” the London Fire Brigade said.
“The Fifty Shades effect seems to spike handcuff incidents so we hope filmgoers will use common sense and avoid leaving themselves red faced,” said fire officer Dave Brown.
The fire brigade launched a Fifty Shades of Red campaign following the 2011 release of the novel that inspired the film, “asking people to think carefully before getting themselves into sticky situations.”
It said officers had responded to 90 calls to remove handcuffs in the last four years, as well as several incidents involving men with rings stuck on their penises.
On Twitter, the fire service gave its “top tips” for avoiding trouble: “1. Don't force it on. 2. Keep the keys handy. 3. Use some common sense.”
