THE popular Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts series will celebrate 24 years with a full programme of music to suit a variety of tastes, from November 22 to April 3.
Back by popular demand are Freshlyground, Arno Carstens, Mango Groove, Jimmy Nevis, The Parlotones, Prime Circle, Mi Casa, The Soil, Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival, Goldfish, and The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
There are also some interesting duos in the mix this year, including Shortstraw and The Plastics who share the stage, as do Matthew Mole and Rubber Duc. Al Bairre and Bye Beneco, and Zebra & Giraffe and Monark, as well as the energising Karen Zoid with Francois van Coke are all bound to please.
Launching the season on November 22 is Freshlyground with a ten-year track record on South African and international stages. Their ascension was rapid – they became a household name in South Africa in 2004 with the release of the smash-hit album Nomvula, and every album released since has generated at least one radio hit.
On November 29 singer/songwriter Zonke Dikana will make her debut at Kirstenbosch with her “melodic medication” for soul. The December 6 concert will see Arno Carstens return to the stage, and Mango Groove will be back on December 13. Catch Jimmy Nevis on December 27, and see in the New Year with Jeremy Loops and Grassy Spark.
l Gates open at 4pm, concerts run from 5.30pm to 7pm. Tickets: R110 – R175, or R80 – R140 for ages 6-12, 021 799 8783.
